Room Split

Split rent fairly when rooms aren't equal: weigh size, a private bath, closet, light and parking, handle a couple sharing a room, or have everyone bid and get an envy-free split where nobody would rather swap.

What shipped

Room Split is a rent splitter for roommates and couples, for the moment when somebody gets the big room with the bathroom and everyone has to agree what that's worth. It has two ways to split. By features: enter the rent, utilities and up to six rooms (square feet, who's in it, one or two people, private bath, closet size, light, parking, balcony, noisy), then choose how much of the rent counts as shared space (kitchen, living room) split per head. The rest is split by how good each room is, using feature weights you can tune. You get a little floor plan sized by square footage with each room's price, a table with rent per room, per person, with utilities, the difference vs an equal split and $/sq ft, plus a CLOSE TO EVEN / REAL DIFFERENCE / LOPSIDED stamp and chips like COUPLE ROOM, BATH PREMIUM, SHOEBOX and $/SQFT SPREAD. By bids: each party (a person, or a couple sharing a room) writes what they'd pay for each room so their row adds up to the rent. Room Split tries every possible room assignment, gives the rooms to whoever values them most in total, then sets prices that add up to the rent so that nobody would rather swap at those prices. A check grid shows each party's "savings" in every room, with their own room in green and any envy in red. Five presets, a copyable markdown summary with a CT timestamp, and the setup saves only on the device under room-split-v1.

How to try

  • Start with Two-bed, one has the bath, then drag Shared space split per head from 40% down to 10% and watch the primary room's premium grow.
  • Load Couple + one roommate to see how a couple in one room pays double the shared-space slice but splits one bedroom.
  • Switch to 2 · By bids on Four-bed college house. The bids move two people into different rooms, and the check grid confirms nobody wants to swap.
  • Edit a bid, hit Scale rows to rent if a row doesn't add up, or Fill from feature split to start from the feature prices. Then Copy summary for the group chat.

Why this (vs neighbors)

This is an original idea this run. The Startup Opportunities Page couldn't be read, so this one wasn't picked from that list. It's a personal utility for a money conversation people put off. Tip Pool split a shared pot by hours and role, and Price Ladder priced tiers for a business. This one splits a shared bill between people who get different things, and the bid mode uses the same envy-free idea fair-division researchers use for rent.

Scope trim

No accounts, no payment requests, no lease terms, and no move-in/move-out proration. Up to six rooms, a room holds one or two people, and the feature weights are simple percentage bonuses on square footage.

Limitations

  • A starting point for a fair conversation, not lease or legal advice. The feature weights are guesses you should argue about.
  • The bid split is only as good as the bids. If someone bids strategically, the result can still be envy-free for the stated numbers but not for what they actually want.
  • In the bid mode a party can end up paying a bit more than they bid for their room when bids are lopsided. It's still the room they like best at those prices, and the app flags it.
  • Everything lives in this browser only. Clearing site data resets it, so copy the summary.

Suggested next steps

  1. Add a share link that encodes the setup so each roommate can enter their own bids on their phone.
  2. Add move-in/move-out proration and a "who's paying the landlord" settle-up view.
  3. Add a "maximin" option that picks, among envy-free prices, the one that's best for the worst-off person.
