Idle Rig

Is renting out your idle GPU worth it? Rental income vs power bill vs marketplace fees vs wear, per month, with the break-even hourly rate.

Every preset is an example assumption, not a market quote. Hourly rates, wattages and card values below are rough placeholders to get you started. Rental prices move week to week, so check current marketplace prices and your own power bill, then edit the numbers.

Wear is how much of the card's resale value you assume a rented hour burns, on top of normal aging (fans, thermal paste, resale "used for rentals" haircut). 1.5% per 1,000 h on a $1,600 card is about 2.4¢ per hour. If you'd keep the PC on and listed anyway, set idle watts to 0.

What if occupancy changes?

Month = 30.4 days. Gross = rate × rented hours. Fees = gross × fee %. Power = (GPU + system watts) × rented hours + idle watts × listed-but-unrented hours, × your $/kWh. Wear = card value × wear % ÷ 1,000 × rented hours. Break-even rate = (power + wear) ÷ (rented hours × (1 − fee %)). Ignores taxes, internet, cooling, hardware failures and payout minimums.
